Akademik Prof.Dr. Musa A. Haxhiu
(March 15, 1939 - September 17, 2007)
Musa A. Haxhiu, MD, PhD 68 of University Heights, formerly of Kosova, lost his battle with cancer, Monday, September 17, 2007, passing away at University Hospital, Cleveland. Dr. Haxhiu was born, March 15, 1939 in Pej, Kosova.
Dr. Haxhiu earned his Medical Degree from the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1963, he continued his education earning Magistar of Cardiology in 1971 and in 1973 earned a PhD from the University of Zagreb, Yugoslavia.
Dr. Haxhius career in science began at the Hospital for Lung Diseases, Pej, Kosova, where he served as an intern from 1964 -68, he served as resident at the Institute for lung Disease in Belgrade and completed post graduate work at the Hammersmith Hospital in London as a visiting lecturer. He was the Dean of Medical Faculty at the University of Prishtina, Yugoslavia. He was a visiting scientist through the Fulbright Program at the University of Pennsylvania and also a visiting scientist at Silikose-Forscungsinstitut der Bergbau-Berufsgenossenschaft Bochum, West German.
In 1981 Dr. Haxhius career brought him to the United States where he served as a visiting professor at Case Western Reserve University and in 1992 he became a permanent member of the faculty at Case Western Reserve as Professor of Medicine. He also served as a Professor of Anatomy and most recently as a Professor of Pediatrics and the Director of the Neonatology Respiratory Research Laboratory at Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital. In 2000 Dr. Haxhiu was invited to revitalize the Medical School at Howard University, Washington DC. Also during his tenure at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Haxhiu was a visiting scientist at the University of Health and Sciences, Bethesda, MD; Professor of Physiology at the University of Prishtina, Yugoslavia and was President of the Academy of Science and Arts of Kosova.
Dr. Haxhiu had numerous papers published in many medical journals and had oversight on many projects making advancements in the treatment of cardio respiratory functions.
He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; the American Physiological Society; the International Brain Research Organization; the Society for Neurosciences; the New York Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosova and the Yugoslav Physiological Society where he served as president.
Dr. Haxhiu was described as an individual dedicated to science, fighting for his patients and his family. An accomplishment he was most proud of was earning his citizenship of the United State of American on May 20, 2005.
Dr. Haxhiu is survived by his wife of 43 year, Radmila (nee Novakovic). Other survivors include 2 daughters: Dr. Lendita Haxhiu Erhardt of Lakewood; Donika Kpuska in Kosova and son: Gjergj Haxhiu of Rocky River. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Vesa, Arian, Nicholas, Emily and Elisabeth; 2 brothers: Malush and Isa and 2 sisters Shasade and Gjylfidane. He is preceded in death by his parents: Ahmet and Selvinaze (nee Qavolli) Haxhiu and a sister Nerxhivane.
